The rigger crew is responsible for the raising and lowering of the bosun’s chair. It is very hard work. The bosun’s chair is like a swing, a swing you put your teacher in. We put our teacher in the bosun’s chair for punishment by the Captain. She was punished because she kept putting her hands in her pockets and leaning. When the Captain told her she was bosun’s chair, she looked up and looked a little scared.
We helped her into the bosun’s chair and started to lift her up. I looked up at her when we were lifting and it reminded me of something. We had to lower her onto a mat three feet away from where she would land. If we could land her on the mat we would get special privileges ice cream the last day of every trimester, No math homework Wednesdays, and ten minutes extra recess every Friday. We lost no math homework on Wednesday because a lad took his hand off the line.
That was one of the responsibilities of the rigger crew (even though we had a little help from all the crews). The bosun’s chair was awesome. I wish I could have gone up in the bosun’s chair.
